Cornelius

With a population of more than 17,800, Cornelius began as a textile mill village 101 years ago, but the town's focus shifted west with the development of Lake Norman, which was created in 1963 when Duke Power dammed the Catawba River. Today, there are magnificent lakefront homes in Cornelius, new retail shopping centers and dining, country clubs and golf courses in Cornelius.  Cornelius also features Jetton Park and Ramsey Creek Park on the lake. Historic Catawba Avenue in Cornelius boasts decorative street lamps, quaint shops and brick sidewalks. Homes in Cornelius range from transitional style in new home subdivisions, to spectacular waterfront estates.

Major waterfront communities in Cornelius:  The Peninsula on Lake Norman, Flagship, Shearwater Point, Wrights Emerald Cove, Norman Island.

Cornelius History:  Established in 1905, the Town of Cornelius originated as a cotton mill and farm community.  Although the Town was originally incorporated as 'Liverpool', the Town's name was changed to ‘Cornelius’ to honor J.B. Cornelius, who was the principal investor in the town’s cotton mill in the mid 1800’s.  As the textile industry waned in the Carolinas, the closing of the mills changed the town’s economy.  In 1963, Duke Power dammed the Catawba River, to create Lake Norman, and Cornelius suddenly became a waterfront community.  Over the years the town of Cornelius had undergone tremendous growth, due to the development of I-77 and its close proximity to Lake Norman and Charlotte.
